How to Give a Promise Ring

A promise ring is a symbol of commitment and is often seen as a pre-engagement ring. However, it can be given for many different reasons — as a symbol of chastity, loyalty, monogamy, friendship, or even a promise to oneself to stay clean and sober. If you want to buy a promise ring for your significant other to signify your commitment, it’s important to clarify what, precisely, you are promising.
1. Choose a promise ring that will tell your significant other that you want to be committed. Promise rings range in styles and prices. The most popular rings include a small diamond or heart-shaped stone. Some people also choose a birthstone
2. Work with the jeweler to make your own creation. Most jewelers are willing to customize a ring for you by designing a specific style and adding special elements, such as engraving.
3. Give a promise ring as a gift for her/his birthday, anniversary of your first date, Valentine’s Day, Christmas or other special occasion.
4. Give the promise ring at your favorite restaurant or perhaps the place where you had your first date.
5. Plan a special day of activities that you would enjoy, such as going for a bike ride or a hike. Then wrap up the day with a picnic where you can present the ring.
6. Be casual when giving a promise ring. This is not a wedding proposal. You don’t need to get down on one knee or write “Love Me” in the sky.
7. Tell your significant other why you got the promise ring and make a promise to be faithful and committed to the relationship. Use words like “I love you,” or “I will be here for you always.” Also say that you would like to marry one day, if that is the case.
8. Place the promise ring on any finger. Most people wear it on the left hand on the middle finger or on the ring finger of the right hand. You don’t want it to be confused with an engagement ring so stay away from the ring finger on the left hand.
